IFEX 2015’s Katha Awards for Food

Through the partnership of Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), International Food Exhibition (IFEX), it is said to be the largest and most awaited food show in the Philippines this 2015 that, happened in the SMX Convention Center in May 21-24.

One of the most anticipated events in the expo is this year’s and the first ever Katha Awards for Food. Katha Awards, formerly called as the Trendy Awards, honors newly developed Philippine food products. The goods should be original and pioneer both in content and packaging. This huge Katha Awards is intended to promote and showcase Philippine cuisine to the world.

Katha Awards was judged by chef and restaurateur Margarita Forés, food editor Angelo Comsti, journalist Cheryl Tiu, Enderun Colleges dean Edgardo Rodriguez, PhD, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) division chief Daisy Tañafranca, and Blue Macay president and part of the board of directors of the Philippine Association of Food Technologists (PAFT) Ayet Austria. They chose the winners according to its Market Demand, 25%; Packaging Design and Innovation, 35% and; Product Innovation, 40%.

Every food products in IFEX have their own unique points but standing out in Katha Awards 2015 and receiving the awards are Barrio Fiesta’s Tubagong for Food Ingredient Category; Green Leaves’ Maja Blanca for Snack Foods; Destileria Limtuaco’s Very Old Captain Rum for Beverage; Island Gems’ Laing for Processed Fruits and Vegetables and; Mama Sita’s for Best Booth Display.

Also, DOST’s Pack of Hope, Smoked Milkfish, Blast Frozen Durian, Mighty Kamote received Special Citation for Product and Packaging Innovation and Social Relevance; while the other Special Citation for Extensive Product Innovation Using Coconut is given to Andy Albao Enterprise.
