8 Cancer causing foods you must avoid

Most people today opted for a commercially processed foods because it’s more convenient, cheap, and easy to prepare. Why would you waste your time baking a meatloaf when it’s already available in easy open cans? But you must be aware because most of these processed foods can cause cancer and here are some of them:


  • Potato chips

This crispy, tangy, and delicious snack can be deadly due to the following content:
High trans-fat-causes weight gain and cholesterol build upExcessive sodium-causes high blood pressure
Acrylamide- a carcinogen that is also found in cigarettes.

  • Hydrogenated oil often found on processed snacks such as chips as preservatives, can cause cancer because of its ability to alter the flexibility of cell membranes throughout the body.
  • “Diet” foods and drinks

Contains aspartame, one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners which can cause cancer and serious birth defects.

  • “Refined” sugar and flour

A common ingredient in processed cookies, cereals, cakes, pies, and juices. Ingestion of these refined carbohydrates is linked to an increase in breast cancer in women. Another health concern is that high glycemic foods tend to spike up insulin levels, quickly increasing blood sugar levels and feeding cancer cells, thus supporting its proliferation.

  • Non-organic and genetically modified organisms

Fruits like apples, strawberries, and grapes may be contaminated with pesticides and nitrogen which can cause cancer. Additionally, these biotechnology-produced organisms are exposed to hormones that can cause rapid growth of cancer cells.

  • Processed meat

Hot dogs, bacon, bologna, meatloaf and the like are commonly treated with sodium nitrate which makes them look appealing to the eye but also one of the causes of colon cancer.

Smoked meats also pick up tar from the process a cancerous substance found in cigarettes.

  • Canned foods

The utmost concern with canned foods is not the content but the can itself. Its lining contains a chemical called bisphenol A. One study shows that bisphenol A affects the normal functioning of genes in a rat’s brain.

  • Microwave popcorn

Just like canned foods, it’s not the popcorn that poses a health risk but the container itself. It is lined with PFOA, a toxin which can also be found in Teflon. This toxin can significantly increase the risk of kidney, bladder, liver, and pancreatic cancer. Popcorns may also be treated with diacetyl which can cause lung disease.

Today, everything happens in a zap. As we go on rushing to beat the deadline, it is an unfortunate fact that other areas of our life may suffer including our meals and our health. But with careful planning, we can still find some time to prepare home-cooked meals that are fresh, delicious, and save the health of ourselves and our loved ones.
