Ampalaya or  bitter gourd, is a vegetable, often disliked by children (and some adults) because of its bitter taste. But there are studies which show that this is loaded with vitamins and minerals and can also help to fight certain diseases. Here are some bitter gourd recipes that you can try:




1pc medium sized onion, chopped
3-5 cloves of garlic, crushed
200 grams ground pork
2cups of ampalaya seeded and sliced into squares
2 pcs of tokwa, cut into cubes and fried
2 tbsp tausi
2 pcs eggs, beaten
1 pouch-200gms tomato sauce
¾ cup of water


Sauté onion and garlic until slightly brown. Add the pork, sauté for 5 minutes.

Add ¾ cup of water, tomato sauce,bitter gourd, and tokwa.

Cover and simmer for 3 minutes. Add black beans and beaten eggs. Simmer once.

Serve while still hot.



3 cups ground pork
1 pcs egg, beaten
1 medium-sized onion, minced
1 cup carrots, minced
¼ cup bitter gourd, minced
Salt and pepper
Lumpia wrapper
Cooking oil


In a bowl, mix the ground pork, egg, onion, bitter gourd, and carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Wrap in lumpia wrapper.

In a pan, heat some cooking oil. Deep fry the lumpia.
Serve with homemade sauce or ketchup



20 gms sotanghon, pre-boiled and drained
2tbsp cooking oil
5 cloves garlic, minced
1pc onion, minced
¼ kilo of pork sliced into cubes
1cup ampalaya, seeded and sliced
1 cup sliced carrots
1 cup shredded cabbage
1 pc egg, beaten
Salt and pepper


In a pan, sauté garlic and onion until slightly brown. Add pork, stir-fry until pork is cooked.

Add 1 cup sliced ampalaya and cook over high heat, add beaten egg, carrots, and cabbage. Mix the dish.

Add the cooked sotanghon and season with salt and pepper.

Serve while still hot.



1/2  kilo cooked spaghetti pasta
500 gms. Spaghetti sauce
1tbsp cooking oil
2-3 cloves garlic minced
1 pc onion, minced
1 cup ground pork
¼ cup water
Salt and pepper
1 cup hotdogs, sliced
2tbsp sugar
2 tbsp ampalaya puree
Note: to make ampalaya puree, get ¼ of a whole ampalaya, slice thinly  and boil in salted water. Then, put in a food processor.


In sauté garlic and onion, add ground pork and sauté for 10 minutes. Pour ¼ cup water to cook the pork.

When the water is almost dry, sprinkle salt and pepper, add hot dog, and pour tomato sauce. Pour in the ampalaya puree. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.

Add the sugar and simmer for another 2 minutes.

Mix the pasta and sauce. Serve with grated cheese on top.
